Food and beverage outlets in the City of Port of Spain may have to change the way they dispose of their trash.
The Port of Spain City Council has applied to the Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Khadijah Ameen, to take a request to the Cabinet to allow for changes to the Public Health Act.
Instead of dumping their garbage on the roadside, food and beverage outlets will have to place it in a durable, plastic-lined container with a tight-fitting lid.
Port of Spain Mayor Chinua Alleyne noted that this method will prevent roaches, rats, dogs, cats, and other types of vermin from scattering the food waste.
He believes that this will lead to a reduction in the city’s costs, as there will be less need for rat poison and traps, as well as the manpower to engage in vermin control.
