President Assents To Home Invasion And Summary Offences Amendment Acts

The President has assented to the Home Invasion (Self-Defence and Defence of Property) Act, 2025, and the Summary Offences (Amendment) Act, 2025.

A release from the Office of the Prime Minister explained the new laws. The Home Invasion Act creates a specific offence for home invasion and affirms the right of citizens to defend themselves, their families and their property within their homes, removing any duty to retreat and permitting reasonable force where necessary.

The Summary Offences (Amendment) Act addresses noise pollution and fireworks misuse, strengthening enforcement and protecting public health, community wellbeing, and animals.

The government says the two laws fulfil electoral commitments and reinforce its commitment to protecting citizens and improving quality of life. They say the laws reflect their pledge to act firmly, responsibly, and in line with the wishes of the people.
