In her first official visit to Tobago since assuming office in April, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar engaged in several activities on the island on Tuesday.
Mrs. Persad-Bissessar’s first stop during her official visit to Tobago was at the Signal Hill Secondary School. As she made her way to the school’s auditorium, she was greeted by hearty applause from students.
She assured Tobago that its students are a priority for her government, including those with special needs.
“During my first term as Prime Minister we established something called the National Enrichment Centre for children with special needs. It was the first of five planned across the nation including one planned for Tobago. Let us work together and get that special needs centre also done here in Tobago. It was left to decline after we went out of office but I pledge that this vision is renewed because not one single child must be left behind.”
During Tuesday’s ceremony, members of the Central Government and Tobago House of Assembly officials received a cultural treat through speech band, drumology, and a presentation of the island’s traditional Carnival characters. Tokens were distributed to the students, while the Prime Minister received gifts. She assured that the government will stand with Tobago.
“I affirm again that under my government Tobago will not be forgotten and must never ever be forgotten again. The children here, the teachers here, the families will always have the full support of my government in education, in opportunities, and in every step towards a brighter future.”
During her visit, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar also paid a courtesy call on Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, then made a visit to the Office of the Prime Minister – Central Administrative Services.
