Princes Town MP Dr. Aiyna Ali Praises Unity Across Faiths

Member of Parliament for Princes Town and Deputy Speaker Dr. Aiyna Ali commended the display of unity and respect for the country’s many faiths shown by fellow Members of Parliament during Ramadan.

Speaking during her constituency’s Eid celebrations, she noted that this year’s Ramadan brought unique challenges, as she managed fasting alongside her expanded duties.

While hosting Eid celebrations in her constituency, Dr. Ali reflected on that shared experience.

“Balancing the responsibilities of the MP for Princes Town and Deputy Speaker presented some challenges. There were some long days that made fasting particularly difficult for me this year. However, I knew that I wasn’t alone because I know that many of you here in this gathering had similar experiences at some point in time. I know that those of us who fast, we do it with great pride and great love for the religion.”

Acting President General of ASJA, Haji Ahamad Hosein, noted that the “true beauty of Eid is reflected in such events where the walls of the Masjids expand to include the wider community regardless of faith or background.”

Echoing the sentiments, Dr. Ali also commended the commitment by Members of Parliament to showcase unity and respect through attending different religious occasions.

“It was profoundly touching to see so many members of the government, regardless of faith, accept invitations to partake in Iftar across the country and in their own constituencies. Many shared with me their excitement and expressed how happy they were to be invited and included in our religion and to learn about Islam. These experiences fostered understanding, strengthened relationships, and reflect the true beauty of Trinidad and Tobago, and that’s our diversity, our harmony, and our mutual respect for one another.”

President of the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) Dr. Surujdeo Mangaroo also commended Dr. Ali’s progress, noting that she continues to break barriers as a young Muslim woman serving as Deputy Speaker.

“The young people are the future of this nation, they are the future of this country, they are the future of the world. So you, young lady, and to the young people sitting here, the future of the world is in your hands.”
