As part of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, Dr. Lesley Garcia, Occupational Therapist and Founding Chair of the Trinidad and Tobago Occupational Therapy Association, is drawing attention to the profound psychological and emotional effects of dementia.
Speaking on the often-overlooked realities of the condition, Dr. Garcia emphasised that dementia is not only about memory loss, but also the deep emotional toll it takes on those diagnosed and the loved ones who care for them. Feelings of confusion, fear, anxiety, and isolation are common, and many individuals may avoid discussing the condition due to stigma or discomfort.
She highlighted the importance of staying both physically and mentally active as part of a holistic approach to maintaining brain health. Dr. Garcia is encouraging open conversations about dementia to reduce stigma and support early intervention.
