The Ministry of Public Utilities is taking steps to improve the stability of the country’s electricity supply following unexpected failures at several Independent Power Producers (IPP).
The assurance came from Minister Barry Padarath while speaking in the Lower House on Friday.
He explained that recent disruptions in electricity service were caused by unexpected shutdowns at several IPPs, placing pressure on the national power grid.
“I recognise the inconvenience caused to citizens and businesses and wish to assure the national community that T&TEC is working closely with TGU and other power producers in actively implementing measures to restore generating capacity and stabilise the electricity supply.”
Minister Padarath said investigations are being conducted into the generation failures, as efforts continue to address weaknesses in the electricity supply system.
“This has been as a result of poor maintenance of several of the power purchase companies over the last nine and a half years under my colleagues opposite. Restoration works are progressing, enhanced monitoring is in place, and technical investigations are being undertaken to identify the causes and minimise the risk of recurrence. Our commitment is not simply to restore supply but to strengthen the reliability and reliance of our electricity system.”
