Recaptured Prisoner Succumbs To Injuries

Abraham Briggs, the escaped prisoner who was recaptured earlier on Wednesday, has died from injuries sustained during a confrontation with police.

The 28-year-old had escaped on Tuesday while assigned to a work detail at the Youth Training and Rehabilitation Centre in Arouca, where he was serving a six-year sentence for Robbery with Aggravation.

According to a statement from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, officers from the Eastern Division’s Emergency Response Patrol (ERP) in Sangre Grande were conducting routine patrols along Jawarsingh Drive, Guaico Road at approximately 11:25am on Wednesday, when they observed a man walking eastward. Upon noticing the marked police vehicle, the man fled into nearby bushes.

Officers pursued the individual and encountered him in a swampy area near a river. According to official reports, the man pointed what appeared to be a firearm in the direction of the officers. In response, one officer, fearing for his life and the safety of others, discharged his service weapon. The suspect fell into the swamp and was immediately attended to by officers on the scene.

He was later identified as Abraham Briggs and transported to the Sangre Grande Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A search operation is currently underway in the swampy area to recover the suspected firearm. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
