San Fernando Central Students Power School Library With Solar Energy Initiative

The San Fernando Central Secondary School Library will now be powered by renewable energy after Form Five students successfully implemented a plan to reduce energy consumption.

The school emerged as the winner of Republic Bank Limited and RE-NEW TnT’s Net Zero Heroes Project.

As part of their prize, the school was awarded a seven-kilowatt solar photovoltaic (PV) system, which will now supply electricity to the library.

School Principal Cindy Khan hailed the initiative as a significant step towards building awareness of sustainable practices among students.

“This project advances our country’s sustainable developmental goals and serves as a practical example of renewable energy in action. As a school, we benefit from projects and partnerships such as these, because they strengthen our educational programmes and help us create richer learning experiences for every student.”

A participant in the project, Amisha Ragoopat, said students were given the opportunity to assist in the solar installation process, gaining valuable hands-on experience along the way.

She highlighted the practical component of the programme as one of its most impactful aspects.

“One of the most memorable parts of the programme were the practical aspects of us getting to interact and build models as a team. This breathtaking experience made science come to life right before our very eyes. This changed my entire overview of renewable energy and the way I looked at the future.”

Sales Manager of Republic Bank Limited’s Cipero Branch, Rakesh Sinanan, said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to building a more sustainable and resilient future.

“This solar PV system is more than just infrastructure. It is a living classroom. It stands as a tangible system of what happens when education, community partnership, and environmental responsibility comes together. Beyond generating clean energy, we hope this project inspires students to pursue careers in STEM fields, encouraging families to adopt sustainable habits, and spark meaningful action across our nation.”

The project included 15 weeks of training, during which students learned about renewable energy and efficient energy use before developing and implementing their own energy-reduction plans.
