Scrap Iron Dealers Urged To Suspend Operations As Licensing Deadline Expires

The Trinidad and Tobago Scrap Iron Dealers Association is calling on all scrap metal operators to temporarily suspend operations and close their gates, pending the renewal or extension of the operational licences required for the industry to function legally.

The request comes as the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism advised that Legal Notice No. 381 of 2025, the Scrap Metal (Extension of Time) (No. 2) Order, 2025, expired on Wednesday, October 14th, 2026, and that it is working with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to monitor compliance and ensure the effective enforcement of the law.

Under the existing regulations, operating without a valid licence is prohibited and dealers are unable to legally purchase, collect, process or export scrap metal until the necessary licensing arrangements are finalised.

A statement from the Scrap Iron Dealers Association said as a result, it is advising all members to suspend trading and collection activities until further notice.

Association President Allan Ferguson said, “We are fully aware of the significant impact this temporary suspension will have on thousands of citizens, including scrap yard owners, employees, collectors and their families, who depend on the industry for their livelihoods. The Association understands the concerns and uncertainty facing our members during this period. However, we wish to reassure all stakeholders that we remain committed to working closely and collaboratively with the Government, particularly the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism, to achieve an early and mutually beneficial resolution.”

Mr Ferguson said the Association recognises the importance of maintaining a properly regulated and sustainable scrap metal industry and remains optimistic that through continued dialogue, cooperation and mutual understanding, the outstanding licensing matters can be addressed in the best interests of all concerned.

“In the meantime, we urge all members to remain calm, patient and united, while continuing to respect and comply with the country’s legal and regulatory requirements.”

The Ministry of Trade has since said that a further notice to all stakeholders will be issued once a subsequent Legal Notice has come into effect.
