Leader of Government Business in the Upper House, Senator Darrell Allahar, says while Zones of Special Operations (ZOSOs) have never been tested in Trinidad and Tobago, the government is confident that they will produce measurable results.
He pointed out that a ZOSO-type intervention was implemented in the Chaguanas district from 2017 to 2020, which led to a major reduction in crime.
“Murders in Chaguanas 2017 to 2018, a 13% decrease. 2018 to 2019: 57 % decrease, and 2019 -2020: 8% decrease. Murders in Enterprise, in that focus zone, 2016 to 2017: 8% decrease. 2018 to 2019: a 75% decrease as a direct result of Operation Steelgate. That was the name of the operation, Steelgate.”
He was speaking during a Senate debate on Wednesday.
