There has been a marked increase in the number of road fatalities in Trinidad and Tobago over the last few months.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s Public Information Officer, Inspector Michelle Lewis, shared data on road traffic accidents for the first few months of 2025.
She said while there had been a 10% decrease overall, there were significant increases in certain categories of traffic fatalities.
With regard to the Eastern Main Road, she said there has been an increase in deaths.
“We have seen an increase of 53%. So in 2024 we had 15 fatalities, and in 2025, we’ve had 23 fatalities already for the year. So there has been an increase in fatalities. There has also been an increase in road traffic accidents generally on the main road. There has been an increase of 40%. We had 15 last year, and this year we have 21.”
Inspector Lewis noted there has also been a significant increase in the number of fatalities among motorcyclists.
“We have been seeing an increase, actually a 400% increase in the fatalities where bikers, as in motorcyclists, are concerned, for the year as compared to last year. So last year we had one, and this year we have five.”
The TTPS Public Information Officer said speed, driving while tired, and weather conditions can all contribute to road fatalities. She urged drivers to be more cautious on the nation’s roads.
