Smallest Triplets In T&T Discharged From NICU At Port of Spain General Hospital

The North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) has announced the successful discharge of the smallest triplets ever delivered and cared for in Trinidad and Tobago.

The infants were born at 27 weeks and spent several months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Port of Spain General Hospital before being released into the care of their family.

In a statement, the Authority said it “proudly announces a remarkable milestone for the clinical team” and recognised the infants’ survival and development as reflective of “the highest standards of neonatal medicine, advanced respiratory and nutritional support, and the unwavering dedication of our nursing and medical staff.”

The NWRHA also acknowledged the broader realities faced within the NICU.

“While we celebrate this extraordinary outcome, we do so with humility and deep awareness. The NICU is a place of both hope and heartbreak. We remember every baby who has been cared for within these walls and hold close the families whose journeys have taken different paths.”

According to the Authority, the achievement is not only a medical milestone but also reflects its ongoing mission. “This announcement is not only about a medical first. It is a testament to what our team strives for each day: excellence, compassion, and honesty. We remain committed to supporting every family whether they leave with their baby in their arms, or with their baby in their hearts.”

The triplets’ names and medical details have not been disclosed at the request of their family. The infants are now at home and continue to receive paediatric follow-up care.

The Authority said the family has expressed “quiet gratitude for the NICU team, the NWRHA, and for all babies who have fought and continue to fight in intensive care.”

It also confirmed that no interviews will be conducted at this time.
