Although a tropical disturbance is currently being monitored by the Meteorological Service just east of the Lesser Antilles, the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government had already scheduled and hosted a virtual Disaster Management Stakeholder Overview Meeting on Friday.
During the meeting Minister Khadijah Ameen assured that the government is doing the necessary preparation and coordination for community resilience early.
Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Khadijah Ameen, assured that the government is undertaking early preparation and coordination to build community resilience.
“So this really was to bring together all the agencies and partners who are committed to national resilience and emergency response. We had the representatives from the Meteorological Service, Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM). Of course, the Ministry of Rural Development also has 14 Municipal Corporations. So we had the Disaster Management Coordinating Units, Chief Executive Officers of the Corporations.”
Minister Ameen said that while there is no immediate threat of severe weather conditions, we are currently in the hurricane season and there are several weather patterns in the region. She is therefore urging the public to take the necessary precautions.
“Bolt down your roof if you are concerned that you could lose it with high winds and take other precautions. We will, of course, at the Disaster Management Units at the Regional Corporation, be available to come into communities and do lectures to share information on how you can be more disaster ready. And of course we lean on our volunteers, our community emergency response teams, volunteers in various communities, and we recently had some more training, and we’ll continue with those training.”
