Study Finds High C-Section Rates In T&T

A new study on trends in caesarean sections in Trinidad and Tobago shows that the rate for the procedure is high.

The study, published by former Director of Women’s Health, Dr. Adesh Sirjusingh, and Zada C. Mohammed, was released on March 2nd.

The study indicated that the C-section “rate in T&T… far exceeds the levels associated with reductions in maternal and neonatal mortality”.

The report adds that “The significant disparity between the public and private sector C Section rates is suggestive of non-clinical factors potentially influencing the mode of delivery”.

The findings, the study said, are suggestive of an urgent need to review indications for C-sections to ensure that the procedure is used appropriately and equitably.

The study looks at national C-section rates from 2018 to 2025.
