Residents of Techier Village in Point Fortin now have greater access to digital tools and opportunities with the opening of the Techier ICT Access Centre.
The Centre, which was opened on Friday, is part of the Ministry of Digital Transformation’s ongoing effort to provide all communities with access to essential digital resources.
Minister of Digital Transformation Hassel Bacchus said the Access Centres play a critical role in communities.
“Today is more than just the opening of an ICT Access Centre; it is the opening of a door – a door to opportunity, and a door to knowledge, a door to possibility. Walking through the Access Centre’s doors open access to the tools and knowledge that fuels today’s economy.”
The Minister said the Centre is not just available to those who are technologically inclined.
“You know what it provides you with: access to the internet, opportunities to build digital skills and literacy – you have devices, you have ways in which you do it, you have staff here, you have access to skills programmes as per the question that was asked, We Learn TT, which offers all of these courses, you have the ability to leverage e-government services, there are over 300 government services available.”
The PNM’s candidate for Point Fortin, Kennedy Richards Jr, said the Centre gives students in the area the edge to complete assignments or projects that require research.
“For those who may not have that internet access at home or even in the palm of their hands as most of us would have, the Government is providing you with this Access Centre, and this Access Centre is not just in Techier Village – even though I think that we are special, the government is providing that throughout Trinidad and Tobago.”
The Techier ICT Access Centre is one of 23 centres that provide access to digital tools, training, and connectivity at no cost to citizens.
