As Trinidad and Tobago continues to mourn the loss of calypso legend Slinger Francisco, The Mighty Sparrow, veteran promoter Randy Glasgow is calling on the nation to observe a minute of silence at 12:50 p.m. on Friday, a symbolic tribute inspired by Sparrow’s iconic classic, “Ten to One”.
The call follows the passing of the legendary calypsonian on September 27th at the age of 91.
“We are here to ask the entire nation, all of Trinidad and Tobago, to go silent, simultaneously, for one minute. This Friday, at ten minutes to one. That was one of Sparrow’s biggest songs, where the nation stood still. We are asking the nation, this Friday, to stand still again, but this time in honour.”
He said Sparrow was more than an entertainer, describing him as a national institution, cultural ambassador, social commentator and one of the country’s most influential voices whose music shaped generations of Trinidad and Tobago’s history.
“For seven years, he took T&T to every corner of the globe. So this Friday, let’s show him that love, let’s show some respect, let’s do something for his legacy. This Friday, ten minutes to one.”
From Cedros to Toco, Mr Glasgow is urging homes, schools, workplaces, markets and even Parliament to pause briefly, allowing Trinidad and Tobago to say a final thank you, farewell and “we love you” to the Calypso King of the World.
