On Sunday, Tobago joined the nation in engaging in prayer and reflection in observance of this year’s Independence Day.
Following a morning of sporting action amid heavy rainfall, Tobagonians gathered at the Shaw Park Complex to participate in a two-hour-long prayer and worship event titled “United in Faith.”
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, speaking at the event, said the island’s independence prayer is to receive long-awaited self-governance.
“Over the last 63 years we have contributed significantly to the building up of this country, and even as we pray today, we are praying that perhaps in this our 63rd year, Trinidad and Tobago will look inwardly and finally decide to correct a historical injustice and ensure that the people of Tobago receive what is justly ours in terms of our autonomy.”
Chief Secretary Augustine said the island also continues to pray for safety and prosperity for all citizens, and improvements in Tobago’s tourism industry.
“Tobagonians, you are guaranteed that God is with us every single step of the way. These 44 years of the Tobago House of Assembly, he has been with us every single step of the way, and he will see us through and take us to the Promised Land that we have been planning and preparing and working for, for so long.”
Tobago’s Independence Day celebrations ended with a movie night at the Shaw Park Complex.
