A date for the Tobago House of Assembly elections can be expected very soon.
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine made the revelation while speaking with the media on Monday.
“More than likely before the month end or by the earliest maybe 1st of December or so, but very soon you will have an election date.”
Mr. Augustine responded to statements being made suggesting that there should be a fixed election date, rather than it being left to the Chief Secretary.
“Right now, given when the House is dissolved, we have a National Carnival programme happening. So if we had a fixed date, chances are we could end up with an election on the same day we have a Panorama Finals, for example, and then if that happens, then people in Tobago have to choose between going to a Panorama Finals in Trinidad or voting. So the benefit of not having it super fixed is that we can actually look at the Carnival calendar, for example, because that is what is happening now, and try to pick a date that will not collide with any of the other national activities and allow for everybody to participate.”
The Assembly was dissolved on November 12th. According to the THA Act, an election must be called within three months following this date.
