Tobago Elections Clean Thus Far

The Council of Ethical Political Conduct says the campaign ahead of the Tobago House of Assembly elections is off to a generally positive start but there are early concerns about conduct on social media.

A release from the council states that political parties and candidates have, so far, been largely respecting the integrity of the campaign.

The Council says parties have publicly committed to running a clean campaign in the lead-up to the January 12, 2026 Tobago House of Assembly elections.

It also confirmed that all political parties were invited to sign the Code of Ethical Political Conduct during a live televised event in Tobago on Tuesday, December 23rd however, only two of the four political parties took part in that signing.

Despite this, the Council says the invitation remains open.

Political parties in Tobago can still arrange to sign the Code by contacting Council member Curtis Williams at the Tobago Division of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

The Council says it has received reports of conduct that may violate the Code particularly on social media and it notes that it does not have the resources to monitor all online activity and is therefore relying on members of the public to report specific incidents that may be in breach of the Code.

As election day approaches, the Council is reminding political parties, candidates and their supporters of the core principles of ethical political conduct.
