Transport Minister: Video Calls, Live Streaming Behind The Wheel Under Scrutiny

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Senator Eli Zakour, has expressed his Ministry’s concern over the increasing use of mobile phones and windscreen-mounted devices for video calls, recording, and live streaming while driving.

While recognising the benefits of rapid technological advances, he warned that using mobile phones while driving distracts drivers, blocks visibility, and puts road safety at risk.

As such, he said the Ministry is actively monitoring these trends, particularly the use of devices in ways that could undermine existing traffic laws.

“While technology continues to evolve, the fundamental obligation of a driver to maintain full control of a vehicle and undivided attention to the road remains unchanged. The Ministry is therefore closely monitoring the growing trends in mobile and peripheral devices, particularly those that may be used in ways that undermine the intent and effectiveness of existing driving laws. This review is aimed at determining whether additional regulatory provisions, clear definitions, or strengthened enforcement mechanisms are required to adequately address emerging forms of distracted driving. The overarching objective remains that the law be responsive to technological change while preserving the paramount goal of protecting lives and promoting safer roads.”

Minister Zakour made the statement in response to a question in the Upper House on whether the Government is considering additional regulatory or enforcement measures to address the growing use of windscreen-mounted devices for video calls, recording, or live streaming while driving.
