The Trinidad White-Fronted Capuchin and Trinidad Howler Monkey are now Environmentally Sensitive Species.
In a release, the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) explains that regulations prohibit taking possession, hunting, and the sale of any Environmentally Sensitive Species.
It also penalises individuals for destruction of the animal’s habitat. The fine for causing damage or being found in possession of any of these creatures is $100,000 and imprisonment for two (2) years.
There are now 13 animals protected by these rules. Each one is indigenous to Trinidad and Tobago or, if not, is present on these islands for part of their life or reproductive cycle.
The EMA is urging members of the public to obey the guidelines because these species are critical to this country’s biodiversity and ecosystems.
