The recent announcement of the increase in some key Customs-related fees from January 1st, 2026, has been met with mixed reactions.
The Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce notes that it understands these adjustments but underscores that such increases must be matched with improvements in customs and port efficiency.
In a media release, the TT Chamber said it looks forward to the delivery of long-promised modernisation measures, including the full implementation of digital customs systems and debit card payment infrastructure, noting that fee adjustments must translate into value for the business community.
It further expressed concern about the impact the increased fees will have on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, noting that these costs may contribute to higher consumer prices and inflationary pressures.
The TT Chamber says it is engaging members to develop a comprehensive impact assessment of all recent and proposed cost increases affecting the ease of doing business. This will form the basis for dialogue with public sector stakeholders going forward.
