Trinidad and Tobago engaged in several high-level bilateral meetings and multilateral engagements on Day 3 of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

This is ahead of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s arrival on Thursday evening.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to engage in several talks during the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York. She will also deliver this country’s National Statement on Friday evening.

This is Mrs. Persad-Bissessar’s first overseas trip since taking office on April 28th. Ahead of her arrival, a release from the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs reported that Minister Sean Sobers and Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister and Minister in the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Nicholas Morris, met with Cuba, Poland, and Monaco, reaffirming bilateral ties and discussing trade, global security cooperation and investments.

Discussions with Monaco centred around formally establishing diplomatic relations, with a Joint Communiqué signed to promote collaboration in sport, tourism and yachting.

Minister Sobers also participated in the Annual Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 and China (G77), where he reiterated the strong support of Trinidad and Tobago for South-South cooperation and the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He also joined his CARICOM counterparts at a private luncheon of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR).

Parliamentary Secretary Morris delivered an address at the High-Level Dialogue on Dismantling Transnational Criminal Activity in the Western Hemisphere, emphasising this country’s commitment to combating organised crime, illicit arms trafficking, and other threats to peace and development through coordinated regional action.

Additionally, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs and Head of the Foreign Service, Randall Karim, represented Trinidad and Tobago at a meeting of CELAC and the European Union.

A full programme of bilateral and multilateral meetings with international partners is expected to continue.

The UN General Assembly will conclude on September 29th.
