TT Meteorological Service Set For Radar Upgrade

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service will soon benefit from a brand new radar.

That’s according to Senior Official from the Ministry of Public Administration and Artificial Intelligence, Jaya Ramoutar.

Ms. Ramoutar was speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Caribbean Regional Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Forecasting, Climate Services and Disaster Preparedness at the Radisson Hotel in Port of Spain on Thursday.

“Trinidad and Tobago has already invested significantly in our radar systems, observing networks, satellite data reception, and environmental data collection. Building on this foundation, the Ministry of Public Administration and AI is in the process of acquiring a new weather radar for the Meteorological Services Division. This initiative aligns with the government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago’s digital transformation strategy.”

Ms. Ramoutar stressed the importance of AI in weather predictions, saying it gives small islands of the Caribbean the powerful opportunity to strengthen these services.

“Done properly, AI can improve flood and drought prediction. It can support better nowcasting for high-impact weather events that affect urban areas, like Port of Spain, and it can help ensure that warnings are not just scientifically sound but are relevant and understandable to farmers, fisherfolk, coastal communities and vulnerable populations.”
