The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service says it is prepared to manage the phased release of people previously held under Preventive Detention Orders.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Suzette Martin, says the TTPS has made the necessary operational preparations to maintain public safety during the transition.
She says divisions, intelligence, investigative and operational units remain coordinated, with policing guided by intelligence, evidence and the law.
DCP Martin says there will be increased police visibility and targeted operations in areas where assessments indicate they are necessary, including efforts to disrupt illegal firearms, gang activity and other serious criminal threats.
The TTPS is also reminding the public that the revocation of a Preventive Detention Order or the release of a detainee does not, by itself, provide grounds for police action against that individual.
However, where a person remains the subject of an active investigation, police will continue gathering evidence and pursuing the matter to its conclusion.
The TTPS says any further action will be based on evidence and taken in accordance with the law.
DCP Martin is urging the public to remain calm and vigilant, and to report information about criminal activity or immediate threats to public safety through the appropriate police channels.
She says while emergency powers may change, the TTPS’ responsibility for public safety remains.
