The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said it has witnessed noticeable success since the implementation of the State of Emergency on Friday.
TTPS Public Information Officer, Inspector Michelle Lewis, said the TTPS has noted progress in receiving the public’s assistance to alleviate criminal activity.
“Well, certainly, we are seeing a lot of intelligence coming forth, and we really want to thank the members of the public for that partnership, and we really want to encourage the members of the public as well to continue to partner with the police. We really cannot do it without you, and let me just indicate the numbers again that members of the public can use. We have the 736-TTPS, which is directly to the Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioners, and then, of course, you have 999, 555, 800-SAVE.”
She added that one of the aims of the State of Emergency is to remove as many firearms from the streets as possible.
Inspector Lewis stated that over the last 48 hours, officers have been successful in doing so.
“For the last 48 hours or so, we have seen about seven, eight firearms recovered and seized through exercises. Out of those, we had a heavy arm, which you call a rifle, we had a shotgun, four pistols, I think two revolvers, a quantity of ammunition. We have had about over 80 people arrested, over 70 high-priority offenders searched.”
In a media release on Sunday, Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro also encouraged citizens to support law enforcement at this crucial time.
