With Independence Day celebrations just around the corner, Media Ambassador for the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, Sergeant Devonn Jagroop, is encouraging the public to be mindful when using fireworks.
He shared key information on the regulations surrounding fireworks as well as important safety tips aimed at preventing accidents and protecting communities during the festive season.
“A permit is required from the Commissioner of Police if persons desire to discharge fireworks. However, there is an exception: if there are fireworks during a public holiday celebration, there is a public holiday window. So please be mindful of that. Also scratch bombs – scratch bombs are completely and totally banned.”
He noted that, in addition to regulations governing when fireworks may be discharged, there are also strict conditions regarding where they may be used.
“On the 31st of August 2026, Independence Day, between the hours of 8pm and 9pm, that window applies. The discharge of fireworks is prohibited within half a mile of hospitals, animal shelters, elderly homes, senior citizen homes, the airport, farms, zoos and even national parks.”
Sergeant Jagroop noted that anyone who breaches the regulations governing the use of fireworks faces a fine of $450 for discharging fireworks outside the permitted period of 8pm to 9pm on a public holiday.
He added that the use of scratch bombs carries a much heavier penalty, with offenders liable to a fine of $20,000.
