UK Reaffirms Partnership With T&T At Royal Birthday Event

The British High Commission celebrated the 77th birthday of King Charles III with a reception at the High Commissioner’s Residence.

The event highlighted the United Kingdom’s commitment to environmental protection, trade, and innovation, as well as the long-lasting partnership between the UK and Trinidad and Tobago.

British High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago John Dean reflected on the deep and lasting relationship between the United Kingdom and Trinidad and Tobago, from education and culture to sport.

“Dwight York’s success in the UK opened doors in football for Caribbean players, while enriching British football and deepening the cultural ties between our countries. I join the people of Trinidad and Tobago in wishing Dwight and the national football team every success in their qualifying match against Jamaica.”

High Commissioner Dean touched on the subject of visa requirements put in place for T&T nationals, reiterating that this was due to an increase in asylum seekers at the UK border. He reaffirmed that it does not affect the strength of bilateral ties.

“You are all welcome to the UK. Now, more than ever, working together on shared priorities is vital, and the UK remains committed to partnering with the government of Trinidad and Tobago to advance areas of mutual interest, such as climate action, sustainable growth, and the fight against serious organised crime.”

He also noted Britain’s commitment to climate resilience, announcing new funding support through the Green Climate Fund.

“Just last month, the fund approved US$24.1 million for adaptation projects in both Belize and Trinidad and Tobago, strengthening hydro-meteorological systems and building robust early-warning capabilities.”

He reported a remarkable increase in trade between the two nations.

“Between July 2024 and June 2025, total trade in goods and services between our two nations reached an incredible £1.3 billion.”

Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Sean Sobers, highlighted the importance of innovation in diplomacy and leadership.

“By embracing diversity and fostering inclusive practices, women leaders, such as our Honourable Prime Minister, are setting a precedent for innovation and driving long-term success.”

The celebration of the birthday of King Charles III embraced the theme ‘Modern Britain: Nature and Innovation.’
