The United National Congress (UNC) is calling into question the integrity and impartiality of the nine Independent Senators.
During a press conference on Sunday at the UNC’s headquarters, the party’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Dr. Kirk Meighoo, noted that a three-fifths majority is needed to pass the Prime Minister’s Pension (Amendment) Bill, 2025, thus requiring support from the Independent bench.
The Bill, which was passed in the House of Representatives by UNC and TPP votes, now requires persons to serve at least one year as Prime Minister in order to qualify for a pension.
“If four senators do not support the bill, then they will actually allow the PNM to continue to rape the Treasury, even in opposition. This is a tremendous power that these senators have. They can thwart the will of the 335,161 citizens who voted for the UNC in our decisive historic victory. Who are these people?”
Dr. Meighoo said that the concept of Independent Senators is skewed, and he wants to know the link between the President and the nine Independent Senators.
“There are no Independent Senators, despite the way people talk about them. The Constitution contains no such term. They are Presidential Senators, and in this case, they’ve been appointed by President Christine Kangaloo, a longstanding and deeply embedded figure within the People’s National Movement.”
