Union Leaders On Workers Interests

The 88th anniversary of the Labour Day Movement was observed on Thursday in Fyzabad.

Various trade unions gathered to commemorate the contributions of the working class to the economy while reflecting on the pioneers of the movement.

The morning began with union leaders laying wreaths on the grave of the pioneer in labour, Tubal Uriah “Buzz” Butler.

President of the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union Ancel Roget encouraged trade unions to protect the interests of the working class. Mr Rogert said the contribution of this class must be recognised.

Mr Roget added that the workers agenda aims to end the proliferation of contract work in the public service and statutory boards, including state enterprises, and to amend labour legislation in the shortest possible time.

President General of the Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union, Michael Annisette, called for support for the Prime Minister’s Pension (Amendment) Act, 2025, which proposes to establish a threshold for eligibility to access the pension.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and several members of government joined the annual Labour Day rally in Fyzabad.
