Unique Not Different – Seeing Living Blind, Leading Change

This morning, advocate and changemaker Shamla Maharaj shares the remarkable story of Granville Carter “Mr. DJ”, a blind self-advocate and skilled craftsman from Barbados, who continues to lead with strength, courage, and purpose.

Granville opened up about his personal journey, one marked by early challenges, self-doubt, and barriers in almost every aspect of life, from education to banking. But rather than give up, he chose to step out of his shell and push forward, determined to progress and live fully.

Despite the obstacles, he has used the resources available to him to navigate the world and build a meaningful life and career. His story is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of inclusion, shedding light on the everyday experiences of persons with disabilities and the importance of creating accessible systems for all.

The project, led by Maharaj, advocates for greater awareness and policy change, reminding us that being unique is not a limitation, it’s a strength.
