US Army Medical Team Embraces T&T During Dental Readiness Training Exercise

Amid praise from Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for the medical services being provided to citizens, U.S. Army medical personnel say their experience in Trinidad and Tobago has been overwhelmingly positive.

The doctors are here as part of a Medical Readiness Training Exercise.

Over the past several days, the United States Dental Readiness Training Exercise, known as DENTRETE, has been delivering essential dental care to communities across Trinidad and Tobago.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said the humanitarian initiative reflects the strengthening partnership between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States.

U.S. Army Dentist Dr. Eric Sorensen, explained that the mission serves both a humanitarian and professional purpose, allowing military medical personnel to sharpen their skills, while sharing knowledge with local healthcare professionals.

“The purpose of these missions is to get a chance to get a chance to practice our skills in different environment and share knowledge with people we work with and learn from them. You get to meet lot of interesting people and its a very worthwhile experience and exercise.”

Dr. Sorensen also commended the staff and facilities at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, noting that the procedures carried out during the mission were completed successfully.

“The staff here is excellent. I had everything i needed to do a good job, right supplies, instruments and expertise to help me. Patient flow went smoothly and no complications all surgeries went well.”

Beyond the professional experience, Dr. Sorensen said he has developed a deep appreciation for Trinidad and Tobago and its people.

“I have loved my time here. I had no idea what to expect but people have been sweet and kind and polite. Food is amazing. I love the food. Patients have been really good to work with.”

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said the relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States continues to grow, with opportunities for cooperation extending beyond healthcare into areas such as security, disaster preparedness, education, trade and energy.
