“We have to be active doers and creators, not passive followers” The words of Principal of The University of the West Indies St. Augustine Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine, at the inaugural launch of the campus’ Artificial Intelligence Innovation Centre on Saturday. The Centre stands as the region’s first and largest hub dedicated to advancing AI research.
Professor Belle Antoine noted that this centre has been in the making for several years and that it will aid in building our own AI capabilities and indigenous solutions to tackle unique and complex challenges.
Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training Professor Prakash Persad said research shows that Trinidad and Tobago’s active engagement with AI has been low, ranking 124 out of 199 countries.
“Under the visionary leadership of the Honourable Prime Minister, Mrs. Kamla Persad Bissessar SC MP , this is about to change. Laptops are being distributed to secondary school students, and these laptops are AI -enabled. Thus, AI will be introduced to students at an early age. the creation of the ministry of public administration and artificial intelligence also represents another leap in terms of ai engagement in the country.”
