UWI Research Team Urges Caution In Piparo

The UWI Mud Volcano Research Team says the recent activity at the Piparo Mud Volcano caused significant surface changes, including road damage, fractured ground, and collapsed sections of the main crater.

Methane gas emissions were also detected.

The research team warns that the risk of further eruptions and ground deformation is high.

Residents are urged to stay alert, avoid the crater and fractured zones, and report any new cracks or gas emissions.

Authorities are working on expanding monitoring and hazard mapping to improve early warning systems.

Officials emphasize that danger can exist even where the ground appears stable.

The Piparo Mud Volcano is one of the most active in the country, and many residents still remember the major eruption in 1997 that damaged homes and infrastructure and displaced families.

The team says their findings align with information shared with residents during a community meeting in May this year.
