The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) advises residents, visitors, event organisers and vendors that restrictions on the use of water supplied by the Authority in Tobago take effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice.
The restrictions prohibit the use of hosepipes and similar apparatus for watering private gardens and/or washing private motor cars. This includes sprinklers and pressure washers used for these purposes.
The Authority is introducing these measures in response to the threat of a serious water shortage, as drier conditions associated with El Niño place pressure on Tobago’s water resources. Increased demand during Tobago Carnival makes efficient and responsible water use particularly important to preserve supplies for households, businesses and essential services.
Section 49(1) of the Water and Sewerage Act, Chapter 54:40, empowers WASA, where it considers that a serious water shortage exists or is threatened, to impose restrictions covering “the whole or any part of its own water supply system.” These restrictions apply specifically to the Authority’s water supply system in Tobago.
The measures form part of WASA’s AquaForward National initiative and Dry Season Water Supply Management Plan.
WASA urges everyone participating in Tobago Carnival to make conservation part of their preparations, celebrations and clean-up. Event organisers, accommodation providers and vendors should carefully plan their water requirements, monitor consumption and prevent unnecessary use.
The Authority calls on all stakeholders to:
- Comply with the restrictions: Do not use hosepipes or similar apparatus supplied with WASA water to water private gardens or wash private motor cars.
- Clean efficiently: Use buckets, mops and controlled quantities of water for appropriate cleaning tasks. Avoid continuously running hoses.
- Prevent wastage: Turn off taps when not in use and repair leaking taps, tanks, hoses and connections promptly.
- Preserve drinking water: Avoid using potable water for water play and other activities that consume large volumes.
- Maintain proper hygiene: Use the water necessary for safe food preparation, handwashing and effective sanitation while avoiding wastage.
Property owners and occupiers are reminded to maintain water fittings in good condition to prevent water from being wasted or misused. Members of the public are encouraged to report visible leaks through WASA’s established customer service channels.
WASA will continue to monitor water resource conditions and provide updates. The Authority appeals for everyone’s cooperation in protecting Tobago’s water supplies throughout the festival and beyond.
