The ordinary worker at the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) need not fear losing their jobs.
This was confirmed by Minister of Public Utilities Barry Padarath on Thursday as he explained Cabinet’s decision on WASA’s management team.
“The decision of the Cabinet today only affects 34 positions of top senior managers that was brought in under the transformation process. You’re looking at top senior managers with salaries ballooning over $100,000 with perks. So that’s essentially what the Cabinet Note dealt with today with respect to the transformation. It’s that top-heavy layer of managers, the executive management team that would have been brought in under Minister Gonzales.”
Minister Padarath explained that the workers below that level need not worry.
“There’s no mass of employees going home at WASA. It has nothing to do with that. Actually, what the Prime Minister has done today is secure the job of thousands of over 5,000 WASA workers, over 5,000 jobs that were in limbo because of that fear of the transformative process and a plan that was also on its way to the RIC to determine new water rates. All of that has been now scrapped.”
