The Law Reform (Zones of Special Operations) (Special Security and Community Development Measures) Bill, 2026, failed to pass in the Senate after the Government was unable to secure the required three-fifths special majority.
Debate on the Bill entered its fourth day on Tuesday, with four senators contributing before Attorney General John Jeremie SC closed the debate.
The Bill was subsequently read a second time, after which the Senate resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole to examine the legislation clause by clause. The Bill was considered and approved at that stage without amendment.
However, at the third reading, a division was taken and the Bill was defeated, receiving 15 votes in favour, 14 against, and one abstention.
