Union Leaders Hail Political Gains On May Day

The streets of San Fernando came alive on Thursday with the sounds of marching feet, clapping hands, and the shouts of workers celebrating another International Workers’ Day, or May Day, as it is traditionally called.

President of the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union, Ancel Roget, applauded the change in government administration and the election of two trade union representatives, Clyde Elder and Ernesto Kesar, into the Parliament.

“Today is a good day to celebrate. Today is a good day for us. We free. Today is a good day where workers is workers’ time now. We time now. We have a lot to do with very little time to do it. We have a workers’ agenda to implement where all workers, working people will benefit.”

Mr. Roget held the last government administration responsible for a lot of sorrow in the working class.

“Many families today can’t put food on the table because of that particular policy position. Many families today cannot pay mortgage and so on. Many families lose their houses as a result of that and cannot pay their bank loans and so on because somebody decide that they must put them on the breadline.”

Mr. Roget called on the Security Services sector to improve how they treat their workers.

“Some employers, and I am talking about the security industry, would want those security officers, you know, they are some of the most exploited people in this country. They treat the dog more valuable than the security officers. and therefore wanting them to work twelve hours.”
