PM Hails OFAC Licence As Major Victory For T&T

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC has described the recent granting of an OFAC licence to pursue the development of the Dragon Gas project as a “major victory” for Trinidad and Tobago.

In a statement on Friday, she said the granting of the licence marks a significant milestone in the Government’s efforts to strengthen regional partnerships, boost energy security, and unlock economic growth.

The granting of the OFAC licence came ten days after the Prime Minister met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, DC. According to Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar, those discussions were focused on “deepening cooperation and advancing mutual interests” between the two countries.

“I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Secretary Rubio for his efforts in ensuring that this licence was approved and for helping to reopen this critical pathway for progress. This is yet another major victory for Trinidad and Tobago, one that reflects our Government’s dedication, diplomacy, and determination. The people can rest assured that we will continue to work tirelessly to secure further success. As I have said before, the people of Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, and Venezuela all stand to benefit from the Dragon Gas Agreement, which represents a win for regional partnership, energy security, and economic growth.”

The Prime Minister reiterated her Government’s commitment to driving national development and energy sector reform, saying her administration “hit the ground running” upon assuming office six months ago, with its mission being “to transform this nation and deliver the brighter days we promised.”

As part of this mission, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar held high-level meetings on Thursday with representatives from BPTT, Proman, and Woodside, where discussions focused on collaboration, investment opportunities, and long-term strategies for energy resilience and innovation.

“Government continues to deepen energy security by strengthening our partnerships with major energy companies, ensuring that Trinidad and Tobago remains a competitive and attractive destination for investment. These strategic engagements are not only about sustaining production, but also about creating new pathways for innovation, diversification, and sustainable growth within the sector. Against the backdrop of evolving global dynamics, our conversations underscored the vast potential that lies ahead – from reinforcing energy resilience and expanding investment, to unlocking opportunities that will generate jobs and long-term prosperity for our people.”

The Prime Minister said that by building and maintaining these vital international partnerships, her Government “is ensuring that Trinidad and Tobago continues to harness its energy resources strategically and responsibly, securing a stronger and more prosperous future for all.”
