Chief Justice Ronnie Boodoosingh Pushes For Reduced Hearing Timelines And Reopened Courts

“Citizens have the right to expect the hearing of their cases and delivery of decisions in a fair manner within a reasonable time.”

That’s the statement of Chief Justice Ronnie Boodoosingh as he called for reduced timelines for hearings and judgements, and the adoption of performance standards across the system.

Speaking at the Law Association of T&T’s Annual Dinner and Awards on Friday evening, he outlined several immediate measures aimed at revitalising T&T’s judicial infrastructure and improving the delivery of justice.

He announced that several long-closed court buildings are slated for reopening, including the long-awaited restoration of the Supreme Court in San Fernando, which he hopes will be ‘open for business’ by the end of 2026.

In a bid to address the chronic space shortage at the Family Court, Chief Justice Boodoosingh revealed that the Court of Appeal will return to the Hall of Justice in the new year, freeing up courtrooms at the Waterfront Judicial Centre for temporary use by the Family Court. However, he noted that this will be an interim measure while a dedicated facility is pursued.

The Chief Justice said his three strategic priorities during his tenure include the reopening of buildings, a more efficient and better-performing judiciary, and being a collaborator in justice.

He said while “technology is good,” justice must include in-person human interaction and emphasised the need to reopen and maximise the use of judicial buildings to ensure that justice is not only accessible but also personal.

The Chief Justice also promised to consult with judicial officers, court staff, and key stakeholders, including the Law Association, on important decisions.
