Chase Hails Greaves And Roach In Historic First Test Draw Against New Zealand.

West Indies Senior Men’s Cricket Team test captain Roston Chase praised the performance of his batsmen for “stepping up in the time of need.”

The skipper also described Justin Greaves’ double century as “something special” in their team’s draw versus New Zealand, when their first test was concluded on Friday.

It was an astonishing turnaround from the first hour of play on the fifth and final day of the West Indies versus New Zealand first test-match.

The West Indies took on a mammoth chase of 531 in their second innings, one that 37-year-old Justin Greaves took on head first, scoring a double century in the process. Greaves found an ally in Kemar Roach with 58 runs to secure a memorable test draw for the regional team.

One that captain Roston Chase labelled as something special.

“I don’t want to say it feels like a win, but the guys are proud, very happy, especially with the effort it took to do it. It wasn’t something ordinary, it was very special for three of the guys to really stand up and put their hands up in a time of need under very tremendous pressure. So the guys are really proud of the guys and looking forward to a bit of a celebration.”

Chase also praised the double century by Greaves, while referring to Kemar Roach as a modern-day West Indies legend.

“Yeah, I actually thought it was going to be from Shea Holt. He looked like he wasn’t going to be out at any point, but it came from Justin Greaves. I’m happy for him, first double hundred, but to get it in these conditions away from home, I think that’s a superb effort.”

He also added:

“Yeah, it just shows you his character, being out of the team for the last couple of series, coming back in on his first chance given, he shows his class with the ball and with the bat as well. It just goes to show you the quality of a cricketer that he is. And for me, he’s a modern-day legend. I mean, he’s close to 300 wickets, he hasn’t gotten there yet, but in my eyes, he’s a modern-day legend for the West Indies.”

The West Indies will take to the field in their second test match versus New Zealand from December 10th.
