T&T And India Reaffirm Strong Diplomatic Ties

Trinidad and Tobago and India are reaffirming their long-standing diplomatic relationship, as India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, begins a two-day official visit to the country.

Speaking at a flag-raising ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs on Friday, Minister Sean Sobers said the engagement is expected to advance Trinidad and Tobago’s and India’s partnership even further.

“It is my privilege to welcome the Honourable Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India to our shores. This flag-raising ceremony serves as the official commencement of your visit to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Republic of India.”

Talks are expected to focus on expanding cooperation across several key areas. Minister Sobers added that the visit also builds on recent high-level engagements between the two nations.

“Your official visit, which is taking place today and tomorrow, is an eloquent representation of those deep ties and mark a significant milestone that further to the success of the July 2025 visit by the Honourable Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India.”

Minister Jaishankar reflected on the unique connection between both countries.

“India has traditionally had very warm and friendly relations with Trinidad and Tobago, and these ties have been underpinned by shared history, our struggle against colonialism, and by our very special bonds of cricket. In fact, the people of our two countries share so much in common, whether we talk about clothing and sports or food habits and traditions.”

The visit comes as both countries continue to build on decades of cooperation.

Minister Jaishankar expressed optimism about the outcomes of those engagements and he’s also quite excited to try some of our local delicacies.

“I also hope to see something beyond office rooms and perhaps enjoy some of your local delicacies. I believe the famous doubles is what people look forward to.”

The visit continues on Saturday, with several high-level meetings expected.
