The Ministry of Education hosted its National Primary School Choir Competition on Friday morning.
The event brought together 13 finalists and highlighted the role music education plays in developing students both inside and outside the classroom.
Students from 13 primary schools gathered to showcase their talents after advancing through earlier rounds of the National Primary School Choir competition.
More than a competition, Project coordinator of the Primary School Music Unit, Dr. Seth Escalante said the event is a celebration of music education and student development.
“Music is a subject that will holistically develop all students. When you’re learning music, you don’t just learn music to become a good musician, you learn music to become a good person. And I think every country needs good people.”
Dr. Escalante said music can positively influence students regardless of the careers they eventually pursue.
“We’ve been music students. We’ve been exactly where you are. And we know how great your life could be with music in it. We know that whatever career path you choose to go on, music will help. Whatever lives you choose to go on Lifestyle that you choose to live, music will help.”
The National Primary School Choir Competition is the latest initiative aimed at expanding music education opportunities for students throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
