Attorney at Freedom Law Chambers, Anand Ramlogan SC, is calling for the resignation of members of the Public Service Commission (PSC), following a Privy Council ruling that found the Commission acted unlawfully in its treatment of a prison officer.
The Privy Council overturned a Court of Appeal judgment and ruled that the PSC unlawfully deprived the prison officer of her salary and benefits for nearly 18 years, finding that her constitutional rights had been breached.
In response, Mr Ramlogan, who represented the prison officer before the Privy Council, said the PSC cost taxpayers millions of dollars through unfair and illegal decisions and has failed in its role as an independent safeguard for public officers.
He said PSC members should “hang their heads in shame and submit their resignation”, while urging Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to review the constitutional role and necessity of the Commission, which he described as a “colossal failure”.
