Culture Minister Michelle Benjamin Urges Young Artisans To Seize Training Opportunities

Minister of Culture and Community Development Michelle Benjamin has encouraged young artisans training at Export Centres Company Limited’s Laventille Craft Centre to make the most of the opportunity, noting that the skills they acquire can open doors to travel and international exposure.

The ECCL officially reopened the Laventille Craft Centre on Thursday, welcoming a new group of trainees eager to develop their skills in the craft industry.

Minister Benjamin encouraged the aspiring artisans to embrace the training programme, highlighting the opportunities that skilled craftsmanship can create.

“The graduates from this centre here will have opportunities to travel with the Ministry. We are preparing to participate in CARIFESTA. When we are participating in CARIFESTA, most of the delegates is made up of the artisans, who will have the opportunity to earn, not just in TT dollars but in USD.”

The Culture Minister outlined the importance of the training, explaining that it could change the trainees’ lives.

“They can become pathways to employment, small business, ownership and, of course, securing your financial stability. So, young ladies, I hope that you make full use of these opportunities. Our Ministry believes that community development must create practical opportunities for people to build on their talents and, of course, improve your livelihoods.”

Noting that the Centre originally opened its doors in the 1980s, she highlighted the skills on offer in this latest training programme.

“This space is once again dedicated to craft training, creativity and community empowerment. The beauty, the creative grooming, the artistry, the foundation programme running from October 29th to the 4th of December will introduce participants to barbering, nail artistry, hair, make-up, and waxing. These are more than creative skills.”

The Minister promised to revisit the Centre when the young artisans graduate from their training.
