APETT Conference To Focus On Engineering A Better Future

Engineers from diverse disciplines will come together to share knowledge and expertise, collaborating through discussions to help make the world a better place.

President of the Association of Professional Engineers (APETT), Ryan Roper, said their upcoming conference is focused on driving change and using engineering innovation to create a better future.

“We face many challenges across the Caribbean, from drainage, water management issues to understanding new technologies and innovations, to planning them. So let’s start with SMART for example. When you think of SMART, the first thing some people think about is smart TVs and the internet and things, these devices that are now intertwined with our everyday life. So how do we now move towards real-time monitoring and tracking of systems.”

PRO of the Association, Ezekiel Yorke, said ideas developed in academia and business must be turned into action, with discussions bringing engineers together to drive practical implementation for a better world.

“For example, we have ideas such as things that would make roads more resilient, more sustainable, more long-lasting. So for example, we have ideas that are implementing rubberised material into asphalt to make it long-lasting. We also have ways of collecting rainwater through something called water harvesting for flood mitigation.”

The solutions focus on building resilient infrastructure and innovative policies to address climate change and other challenges, using engineering and innovation to help communities adapt and thrive.
