Bye Elections On June 17th For Lengua/Indian Walk And Quinam/Morne Diablo Districts

Eligible voters in the Local Government Districts of Lengua/Indian Walk and Quinam/Morne Diablo will return to the polls on Monday June 17th, 2024.

This, as President Christine Kangaloo on Friday issued writs of elections, based on the advice of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, for bye elections to be held in both districts.

Nomination Day will be Friday May 24th, and Polling Day for the bye elections will be Monday June 17th, 2024.

The People’s National Movement and the United National Congress have officially called for nominations for both districts.

In March, the Court of Appeal dismissed a petition by the UNC to stop a by-election in Lengua/Indian Walk. The UNC filed a petition on August 21st, 2023, after two recounts led to the PNM’s candidate Autly Granthume being announced the winner over the UNC’s Nicole Gopaul-Jones.

Quinam/Morne Diablo was declared vacant after the death of its UNC councillor Diptee Ramnath last December.

Quinam/Morne Diablo falls under the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation, while Lengua/Indian Walk is under the Princes Town Regional Corporation.

Both Corporations are controlled by the UNC.

The Local Government Elections were held on August 14th, 2023.
