The campaign for awareness and empowerment continues for women leaders within the political field.
The Caribbean Women in Leadership (CWIL) continues to champion these efforts and, on Wednesday, hosted a capacity training workshop for women-themed Empowering Women who run.
President of CIWIL, Nana Hesse-Bayne, lamented the ongoing underrepresentation of women, especially from marginalised communities, in parliaments and political parties. She reminded that the Beijing Platform for Action and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) ensure the 50-50 inclusion of women in the various spaces of decision-making.
Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services Vandana Mohit said the workshop is a declaration that Caribbean women will no longer be footnotes in history but authors of new chapters.
The Minister reminded participants of the advice by Shirley Chrislom, the first black woman elected to the U.S. Congress and daughter of Caribbean parents, who encouraged women to make their own way.
Other workshops are carded to be hosted throughout member CARICOM countries in the coming year.
