More than 600 families residing in Cashew Gardens received good news on Friday as Minister in the Ministry of Housing Phillip Alexander announced that repairs to the community’s roadways will be undertaken.
Minister in the Ministry of Housing Phillip Alexander toured the Housing Development Corporation community accompanied by members of the HDC’s Rapid Response Unit, to deliver some welcome news.
“Let’s give them some good news: that under this Government, under this Ministry of Housing, under this HDC, all of these roads are about to be rehabilitated. That is the case. The people of Cashew Gardens who have been begging for years. I remember prior to elections, about four years ago, I was up here, and it was like that, and the people, I know there are a lot of people off camera who are members of law enforcement, armed forces that can’t be on camera that are delighted to see HDC here in Cashew Gardens, because Cashew Gardens felt like the land that HDC forgot where the roads are concerned.”
Another issue to be addressed is the non-functional sewer system.
“Our team, led by Mr Showers, has this sewerage treatment facility fully functional. They are on the way through the rehabilitation process to have it ready to hand over to WASA so that WASA could step in and take responsibility for the water treatment up here at Cashew Gardens and free up a lot of these resources.”
The Minister encouraged residents to bring any additional concerns to him and the Rapid Response Team.
“Our engineering team are on top of everything, as you can see. Before we even got here to show the failing water treatment system, Mr Showers got it functional to the point where we almost got a demonstration. So I think that all of the issues that are affecting the people of Cashew Gardens, if they are not rectified in the coming weeks, they are free to reach back out to me and my team, and we will make sure, and anybody in the HDC, the Rapid Response Team, reach out to us, and we will make sure that it gets addressed.”
Minister Alexander indicated that the homeowners of Cashew Gardens finally have the community they hoped for when they first received the keys to their homes.
