Culture Minister Michelle Benjamin Reaffirms Support For Steelpan And Youth Development

As World Steelpan Month continues, Minister of Culture and Community Development Michelle Benjamin has reaffirmed her commitment to the steelpan community, supporting its growth and championing the development of young people involved in the arts.

With support from her Ministry and the City of Port of Spain, Pan Trinbago brought steelpan and powder to the capital city on Wednesday, in a vibrant celebration for World Steelpan Month.

Speaking at the event, Minister Benjamin reassured Pan Trinbago officials and steelpan players that her Ministry recognises the fraternity’s work and its positive impact on the nation’s youth.

“I embrace the pan community and the youths. I have to commend you. I cannot stand here and not mention August 12th, when those youths jumped on that square. We are standing with the pan community and the youths of Trinidad and Tobago.”

President of Pan Trinbago, Beverly Ramsey-Moore, reaffirmed her organisation’s politically neutral stance, emphasising its unwavering focus on advancing steelpan.

“We work with you and your government to ensure that we continue to empower youths in every single community. We continue to empower our young men and our women in every community in every nook and cranny of Trinidad and Tobago.”

Mayor of Port of Spain, Chinua Alleyne, was elated to see so many people gathered to celebrate Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument.

“We are happy to collaborate and support the work of Pan Trinbago on their mission to continue to take the steelpan from behind the bridge to the world stage.”

Steelpan Month continues on August 21st with a Dr. Jit Samaroo documentary screening at Queen’s Hall in Port of Spain at 7pm. The final event, Steelpan on the Avenue, hosted by the Garcia Family and Pan Trinbago, will bring the celebrations and performances to a close on August 31st.
